Students enjoy language studies
Thanks to generous donations through the Donor’s Choose program, Wiscasset Elementary School fifth and sixth grade students have been learning about languages. School Librarian Lisa Hardman applied for the grant, which resulted in the library receiving materials to support the study of French, Spanish, Italian, Russian and German.
For five weeks students spent their scheduled library classes focusing on different languages. They heard stories from countries where the language of the week is spoken, learned facts about those countries, and then had the opportunity to learn basic phrases in that particular language. At the end of five weeks students were able to choose the language of their choice for independent study, as well as arrange to have lunch with a speaker of the language.
Many students have requested extra library time to continue their study, and are really looking forward to being able to study a foreign language when they reach seventh grade. Many thanks to the parents and community members who donated to this project.
