Summer camp at Heartwood
Registration is under way for Heartwood’s 14th session of summer camp, with three sessions scheduled June 27 through July 7, for students entering grades 1-12. Heartwood’s theater camp is designed with dual purposes: building skills and building confidence, onstage and off.
“Sprouts Camp” is the perfect introduction for young students entering grades 1-2. This four-day, morning session focuses on storytelling, movement and theater games. Students blossom under the care and instruction of Heartwood staff, along with visiting actors/artists with youth theater teaching experience.
“Kids Camp” is a popular eight-day program exploring the areas of storytelling, stage combat, improvisation and movement, designed specifically for students entering grades 3-8.
For high school students and middle school students with previous theater experience, the eight-day “Intensives Camp” focuses in multiple areas: scene work, stage combat, graphics, playing classical, improvisation, poetic language, movement, and monologues.
Camp instructors include a veteran professional staff: Griff Braley, Heartwood’s Artistic Director and Lincoln Academy drama teacher, Alison Machaiek, award-winning drama instructor at Oceanside High School in Rockland, Mark Bedell, certified fight master and professional stuntman and fight choreographer, and Karen Montanaro, mime/dance artist and teacher.
Several visiting actors in residence for Heartwood’s summer production, “The Tempest,” will work with students in all three sessions, lending their expertise, experience and enthusiasm.
Many sponsors make summer camp possible, including Heartwood’s Season Sponsor: Bath Savings Institution, Season Youth Sponsor: Damariscotta Hardware, and Camp Sponsor: The First.
Financial assistance is available, with the help of generous Scholarship Sponsors: Bath Savings, Cheney Insurance, Newcastle Square Realty, Le Garage Restaurant, Carl M. P. Larrabee Insurance Agency, Mae’s Café & Bakery, Full Circle Family Medicine, Hall Funeral Homes, and Young’uns.
