Summerfest celebrates 40 years
First Congregational Church of Wiscasset’s 40th annual Summerfest is Saturday, July 22, from 9 am.to 1 pm. on Wiscasset Common. Summerfest is among several events planned for this year’s 250th celebration of the founding of the church.
Visitors to Summerfest will be treated to a variety of attractions. Music will be provided by Jeff Grosser and the Ragtime Razcals, Joel Pierce on the organ with the ever-popular Salty Dogs finishing off the day. Hot dogs, hamburgers and pulled pork sandwiches are on the menu and the baked goods table will have plenty of choices for dessert. Water Street Kitchen and Bar will offer adult beverages from 11 to 1.
Shoppers will have many opportunities to pick up gifts or that something they’ve always wanted from the many yard sale tables, or for more up-scale items from the Treasures table. Books for all ages will be on sale and the jewelry table will have rings, bracelets and necklaces in all price ranges. The Organ Society table this year will feature decoupage flowerpots and other new items in addition to the usual pot-holders and knitted hats.
Among silent auction items are an L.L.Bean canoe package, a genuine sweet grass basket, a watercolor by Jan Kilburn, a quilt rack, and many gift certificates from local businesses.
Dog owners are encouraged to bring their dogs (or other pets) for the dog parade. Registration will begin at 9:30; the parade starts at 10 a.m. followed by the Hot Dog Challenge. Ribbons will be awarded for best manners, friendliest dog, and best tail wag.
The church’s annual summer event began in 1905 when a church group known as the Ladies Organ Society began holding a festival on the fourth Saturday of July. In 1983, the celebration became an all-church event and has been held annually for the past 40 years.
