Sylvia Alberts exhibit at Monhegan gallery
The Lupine Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Sylvia Alberts. The exhibition will run from July 25 through August 12 with an opening reception on July 25 from 5 to 7 p.m.
The Sylvia Alberts Exhibit features more than 50 landscapes and still-life paintings spanning nearly 40 years of the artist’s career. Early on, Alberts was recognized as a folk-artist, but since she began painting on Monhegan she has moved to what she has described as a “designed realism.”
On Monhegan, Alberts has captured the delicacy and splendor of island cloud formations, and the brilliance of the sun’s reflection on the sea surrounding Monhegan. Her paintings of the island often include island architecture –cottages, fish houses, the Monhegan Museum - simplified, and often in silhouette. Her still-life paintings, brought from her studio in New York City, are being shown in Maine for the first time. They frequently feature well-loved objects from the artist’s island studio on Lighthouse Hill. Many have a playful quality, and all are notable for their finely balanced compositions described with exquisite clarity and startling, vibrant colors.
The Sylvia Alberts exhibit will run through August 12. The gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Lupine Gallery is located at 48 Main Street on the island.
