Take a tour of Maine’s potters May 3-4
Get an inside glimpse into the life of a potter.
This year 19 pottery studios from across the state will be open for the Maine Pottery Tour on May 3 and 4. With tour legs in southern, central and Midcoast Maine, there are as many different styles to see as there are destinations.
Watch for the signs! Local potters on the Midcoast leg of the tour include: Susan Horowitz & Gail Kass of Ash Cove Pottery, 75 Ash Cove Road, South Harpswell, 207-833-6004; Liz Proffetty Ceramics, 118 Old County Road, Newcastle, 207-586-5117; Nancy Button of Fireside Pottery, 1478 Camden Road, Warren, 207-273-3767; Alex Tomasulo of Double Dolphin Way, Walpole, 207-380-1902; and Tyler Gulden with guest potter Nathan Willever, 45 Clark’s Cove Road, Walpole, 207-380-8454.
The participating potters have cleaned up their work spaces and are welcoming visitors in to tour their studio spaces. Stop by and meet the potters who will talk with you about how they make pots, work with clay, and the different techniques they use to decorate and fire their work. You might even get a chance to try a potter’s wheel!
Have a bit of refreshment as you peek into kilns. And, if you decide to buy something that catches your eye, know that purchase will help support your local creative economy.
Tour hours at all the studios are Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The tour is expanding each year and is always adding new potters. You can find out more information about the participating studios in central and southern Maine, maps and photos of the work at www.mainepotterytour.blogspot.com and on Facebook at Maine Pottery Tour.
