Three-day William Zorach watercolor exhibit in Georgetown
For three days in August, the Friends of the Zorach Fountain will present a special exhibition of William Zorach's watercolors at the Georgetown Historical Society (GHS). Friends of the Zorach Fountain is an organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting William Zorach's Spirit of the Sea, a sculptural fountain in Bath's City Park.
Georgetown was a special place for William and Marguerite Zorach who purchased a Riggs family home in Robinhood village in 1923 and spent summers and other special times here into the 1960s.
“We are honored to host this exhibit,” GHS President Jeanne Bailey McGowan said. “The Zorach family was, and is, an integral part of the cultural history of our island. It's perfect timing for this event: the Zorach watercolors will be displayed with our current exhibit, a retrospective of work by Albert J. Pucci who, along with his wife Gora, were good friends of the Zorachs.”
Some 20-30 works, spanning several decades during Zorach's career, includes landscapes and portraits. The paintings have been gathered from members of the artist's family, loaned by Georgetown families and friends, and coastal Maine residents who are admirers of his work.
The opening reception is on Friday, Aug. 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. and members of the Zorach family are expected to attend. The exhibit can also be viewed on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon, and on Wednesday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The exhibit is free and open to the public, but contributions to help support the Friends' “Invest in the Spirit Campaign” would be appreciated.
The Georgetown Historical Society is located at 20 Bay Point Road in Georgetown.
