Towns sponsor free family films at Harbor Theater
During the 2024-25 movie season, the towns of Boothbay Harbor, Southport, and Boothbay will once again sponsor five free family movies for everyone in the community. This year, Harbor Theater published a survey to encourage families to select the movies they would like to see during each holiday period: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter/Spring Break, and Labor Day. Thank you to all of the respondents who helped us choose which movies to show!
The Free Family Films season kicks off with a free Halloween movie on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. The top three contenders included “ParaNorman” (2012), “Monsters vs. Aliens” (2009), and “Monster House” (2006) which is this year’s pick.
“Monster House” (1 hour, 31 minutes,, animated horror) welcomes kids and adults alike into a household full of smart, monstrous fun! No adults believe three kids’ assertion that a neighboring residence is a living creature that means them harm. With Halloween approaching, the trio must find a way to destroy the structure before innocent trick-or-treaters meet ghastly ends. Teamwork and compassion beat out horror in the end.
Join us for spooky Halloween fun in October. Then, in November take advantage of the free movie for Thanksgiving on Saturday, Nov. 23 when the top three survey selections were “A Dog’s Way Home,” “Dolphin Tale,” and the winner this year “How to Train Your Dragon” (2022). December’s pick from the top three “Prancer,” “Elf” and “Polar Express” is the always popular Express. Watch for it when Santa touches down in the Harbor! Date and time to be announced.
2025’s Spring Break free movie will be “Akeelah and the Bee” (2022) from among finalists “Hop” and “Mathilda the Musical.”
And, wrapping up 2025’s summer season will be either a Labor Day drive-in of “Never Ending Story” from among “The Mummy,” and “Kong: Skull Island” if drive-in equipment is available, or a dance party featuring “Hairspray” winner over “Dirty Dancing,” and “Saturday Night Fever.”
Harbor Theater is so grateful to the towns of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, and Southport for their ongoing support in sponsoring these films for all our communities’ families to enjoy free of charge!
