Turnout slow so far in special election
The voter turnout for Wiscasset’s special election to elect a selectman has been very light today. The polls at the community center, which opened at 8 a.m., will remain open until 8 p.m.
Larry Gordon Jr. and Katharine Martin-Savage are running for a five-month term on the board. This past week, Kim Andersson announced in a letter to the editor she was running as a write-in candidate.
Wiscasset Town Clerk Linda Perry said only about 100 voters had cast ballots at the polls as of noontime. Sixty-six absentee ballots had also been received. The election is the only item on the ballot. Perry said the ballots will be hand-counted after the polls close.
Tim Merry, a former selectman and former fire chief, told the newspaper outside the community center he wasn’t surprised by the low turnout and blamed voter apathy. Merry said he felt the special election had gotten plenty of advance publicity. Both the sign at the community center and one outside the town office had messages reminding people to vote.
Over 2,200 voters participated in the Nov. 8, 2016 general election.
