UPDATE: Simmons working on Wiscasset parks and rec proposal after ballot error
Update: Town Manager Dennis Simmons said Thursday afternoon, WCC already had patrons, including children, in it when Parks and Recreation’s closure due to a Sept. 8 town meeting ballot error was announced, so it is still open for regular hours today. “I’m hoping to have some sort of resolution to this issue tonight,” but cannot promise it, he said. In the phone interview, Simmons said he has been working on nothing but the ballot error/Parks and Recreation matter all day.
“I’m going to present them with what their options will be tonight, and then we can go from there.”
Press release/original post: Wiscasset Town Manager Dennis Simmons has called for an emergency meeting of the Wiscasset Select Board at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 to deal with a ballot company printing error on the now passed 2021 Budget Referendum.
The Parks & Recreation Budget article should have read “Shall the Town vote to raise and appropriate $829,889 for the Parks & Recreation Department?” The word “raise” was omitted from the ballot question.
On the advice of the legal department at Maine Municipal Association and the town’s legal firm, the Town Manager is announcing that the Parks & Recreation Department will be closed, effective immediately, until a special open town meeting can be convened to vote on a correctly worded article. We apologize to the patrons of the Parks & Recreation Department and are dealing with the issue in the most expeditious manner possible.
Thursday’s agenda calls for selectmen to discuss and sign warrant for a special open town meeting on the Parks and Recreation Budget.
