Vachon named ‘Flagperson of the Week’
Rorbert Vachon, 58, of Lewiston was nominated this week as the first in a series of “Flagpersons of the Week.” Vachon works for a private company that supplies flaggers to construction sites. He was stationed on Federal Street in Wiscasset Tuesday, June 30 assisting traffic move safely around a crew replacing a water main. Vachon has flagged for nine years following the loss of the small finger on his left hand that left him partially disabled.
“It was lucky that I am right-handed,” he said.
Vachon answered the following questions that led him to the nomination:
Q: Do you like the work?
A:”I love it.” Vachon has to travel long distances each day to the assigned job site often to work 11-12 hours with scant breaks. “There is nothing funny about this job.”
Q: Do you get bored?
A: “Yes and no”
Q: What do you do to fight boredom?
A: “Sometimes I read the license plates on the cars.”
Q: What is your favorite music?
A: “Country and oldies”
Q: What is your favorite work story?
A: “The other day a woman crossed the street and tripped on a stick and fell. I wanted to help her but I couldn’t leave my post. Lucky, some other folks came along. I have seen about everything.”
Q: What is the most important thing about your job?
A: “Communication. You can’t lose track and let the cars come in both directions.”
Vachon said he often works with his wife, Ruth, who as been a flagperson for two years.
