Veterans honored in Dresden

A crowd of 70 turned out at Pownalborough Court House in Dresden Monday for the 64th annual Memorial Day ceremony.
Masonic brother Bruce Alexander Jr. of Dresden Lodge 103 led the ceremony. His father, Bruce Alexander Sr., who led the service for many years, died last spring. State Rep. Jeffery Pierce, R - Dresden, read a tribute to Alexander Sr., honoring his many years of service to the community.
Alexander read the names of nine veterans buried in the Pownalborough Court House cemetery as lilacs were placed on their graves. These veterans fought in the Civil War, War of 1812 and the Revolutionary War.
After the ceremony at the cemetery, the crowd gathered at the flagpole where Pownalborough Court House Steward Jay Robbins hoisted the flag to full mast and young reenactors Joshua Kelley-Cohen, 9, and Levi Kelley-Cohen, 6, placed flowers at the base of the pole.
Lincoln County Historical Association President Bill Danielson thanked residents for coming and welcomed everyone to take advantage of the nature trails and tours being offered in the Court House.
“It wasn’t planned for the boys to do the flowers,” said Shana Kelley-Cohen after the ceremony. “(Joshua) loves history, especially the Revolutionary and Civil wars, this is what he does for fun, and he wanted to dress up. When we showed up today, they were asked if they wanted to help.”
“The masons participate in this ceremony as a way to be more involved in the community,” said Alexander. “It’s wonderful to recognize veterans.”
