Veterans Plaza plans proceed despite pandemic
Plans leading up to the Dedication Ceremony of the Veterans Plaza in Brunswick this fall continue to progress. The Town of Brunswick has selected award winning Atlantic Landscape Construction of Ellsworth, Maine to be the general contractor for the Plaza. Construction will commence after the Ground Breaking Ceremony on Monday, Aug. 17, and will be completed on or before Oct. 31, 2020.
“It was clear to us that they are both talented and meticulous in the way they construct projects like the Plaza,” said David Watson, Chair of the Plaza Organizing Committee. “This project demands unique talents in not only the overall concrete work, but also the installation of the ‘bond outs’ needed to properly install the 445 individual Honor Blocks so they can withstand Maine winters.” This specialty work will be carried out by Day’s Concrete Floors of North Monmouth, and Lakeside Concrete Cutting of Newport, Maine.
“Atlantic Landscape Construction (ALC) is proud to have been selected for this project,” said Chad Francis, the owner of ALC, “both because of the gracious design and its location, but especially because it will honor all veterans who have served this nation. This is a very special and unique honor given to us and to our employees.”
In addition, over the past several weeks the project has received over $35,000 in support of the project. Besides many small gifts, they received pledges of $10,000 and $5,000 from individual donors, and an additional pledge of $5,000 from the Walmart Superstore in Brunswick. The Organizing Committee also reported that a $15,000 pledge from the (Brunswick) Village Improvement Association was made to cover landscaping costs. The Committee continues to raise funds for the Plaza Maintenance Trust, and Dedication Ceremony expenses.
