Vote possible April 14 on support staff pact
Members of the union that represents 53 support staff at the Wiscasset School Department have voted in favor of a new contract, Superintendent of Schools Heather Wilmot confirmed.
The School Committee was set to meet in an executive, or closed-door, session Thursday, April 14, at 4 p.m. at the superintendent’s office, 225 Gardiner Road. The subject is the support staff deal and the committee may choose to vote on it after the executive session, Wilmot said in a phone interview Monday.
The union has been working under an expired contract since 2014, Wilmot said.
If the committee acts Thursday afternoon, the document would need to be finalized and signed by union and school committee heads before it is released publicly, Wilmot said.
Asked for comment on the pact and the process leading to it, Wilmot said both the union and school department were very careful in negotiating wages, working conditions and other items.
“It’s been a long journey together, and I’m glad that we have something I think meets the interests of both parties.”
Once ratified, the new contract would be in place through the end of the 2016-2017 school year, Wilmot said.
Attempts to reach the support association’s president, Lori Cronk, for comment Monday were not immediately successful.
Meanwhile, the teachers union, representing about 70 personnel, has also been working under an expired contract since 2014, Wilmot said. negotiations are continuing, she said.
