Voting for young professionals for Wiscasset board
Dear Editor:
The new leadership we’ve had on Wiscasset's Selectboard this past year has shown us a lot about what new energy can bring to our town without disrupting the historic framework of things that make Wiscasset such a good place to live. We have an excellent and efficient town manager, and a smooth-running board that has been working hard at taking care of business and cleaning up the maintenance gaps that earlier boards neglected.
One of the reasons things are running so smoothly is attributed to the current chairman of the board, Sarah Whitfield. She’s young, smart, and home grown and is seeking reelection. We have two other young smart people who have also thrown their hats in the ring to be on the Selectboard — James Andretta and Wally Giakas.
James is also home grown. He’s refinishing his floors and woodwork one room at a time in the family home he inherited on High Street. He’s an environmental engineer for towns who want solar energy systems like the one our current board got us out at the airport. Wally is an archeologist at the DEP who has bought a home here, is getting married and settling down. He’s concerned about the rising costs of living and the need to keep a lid on spending. These are not wild-eyed young people. They’re hard-working young professionals who want to bring their energy to the task of carefully getting things done, one project at a time.
I like the idea of new blood on the Selectboard.
I’m voting for keeping Wiscasset moving forward with Sarah, James and Wally, and I hope you will too.
