WCC warns of car security after Jan. 2 incidents; police advise against intervening
Wiscasset is among Midcoast towns with reports of thefts from cars Jan. 2. Wiscasset Parks and Recreation Director Duane Goud announced Friday, Jan. 3, four vehicles were broken into at Wiscasset Community Center between 6 and 8 p.m. Jan. 2.
“We believe our facility was targeted together with the many other places hit between ... Rockport and Topsham (that night). Our parking lot was very full ... as we had a number of different events going on within the building ... If you were here ... around these times and remember seeing or hearing anything out of the ordinary, please contact myself or the Wiscasset Police Department as we try to get some answers for these crimes.
“Moving forward, as a deterrent, please remember to secure your personal items out of view when leaving them in your locked vehicle. We also provide day use lockers (bring your own lock) to secure your personal property within the building while attending classes, events or using the facility.”
According to a Wiscasset Police Department Facebook post on Friday, the department is investigating the reports and “following up on all leads.” The post advises against leaving valuables in sight in a vehicle. “Take them with you or lock them in the trunk.
“If you see something suspicious, please do not interfere,” the post continues. “Take note of any vehicle description, license plate info, description of person(s) involved, direction of travel if they leave, and provide that to your local law enforcement agency.”
