We’re going to continue to follow this one …
So, in last week's school committee meeting, some pretty stunning things were said about last month's propane incident at Wiscasset Middle High School. And while no workplace or any place is a good place for something inadvertent to occur with propane, we can probably all agree one of the worst is at a school, when school is in session.
The school department and other town departments will learn from the incident and every party's response during and after. Let us be thankful for what did not occur with the propane and that steps have been taken to avoid a repeat.
And let us be glad it has become a discussion point, because those can help towns on other fronts, as well. A town with clear and frequent communication among its departments, and between departments and the public, is a town that handles things well, in an emergency or day to day services.
And since what departments do is the public's business, and we report the public's business as much as we can manage each week, if there is more out of discussions stemming from or inspired by the Oct. 10 incident and its handling, we'll work to get that to you. As a reminder, we send the paper to press on Tuesday afternoons (or Mondays on remaining holiday weeks this year), so any news after that, you would find at wiscassetnewspaper.com and/or its free Morning Catch emails you can subscribe to via the website.
Week's positive parting thought: Speaking of intra-town communication, kudos to Alna on two recent examples of working with local businesses on topics that can impact them. Selectmen had pit owners on the committee that has proposed blasting rules; and, as selectmen consider a parking ordinance, Fire Chief and Road Commissioner Mike Trask will be meeting with The Alna Store's ownership.
Keep talking, everyone, everywhere!
