This week at Harbor Theater
“Till” – (PG-13; 2 hours, 10 minutes) - “Till” is a biographical film about Mamie Till Mobley, a mother turned activist who fought for justice after the lynching of her 14-year-old son Emmett Till in 1955. The murderers were eventually acquitted of the crime by an all-white jury, shedding light on systemic racism in the Jim Crow-era South. Emmett Till's murder was effectively the impetus for the civil rights movement.
“Till” is directed by Chinonye Chukwu, who discusses the importance of the film in a recent interview with Movieweb. She said, “The film is a heart-wrenching examination of a mother’s strength, a dissection of racism, and proof that one woman can indeed make a difference." Final shows at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7 and Thursday, Dec. 8.
“Goldfinger” - (1964 - PG; 1 hour 50 minutes) - This is the film where James Bond as we know him comes into focus – the Bond theme music takes hold, where Bond, Agent 007, says one of his most famous lines: “A martini. Shaken, not stirred;” and where a wide range of gadgets and weapons appear that would become the series' trademark. James Bond (Sir Sean Connery) takes on Auric Goldfinger (Gert Fröbe) and his henchmen. To save the world once again, Bond will need to become friends with Goldfinger, dodge killer hats, and avoid Goldfinger's personal pilot, the sexy Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman). Two shows only at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8 and Saturday, Dec. 10. Attending the final screening, Dr. Jon Cavallero, Bates Associate Professor of Rhetoric, Film, and Screen Studies will introduce the movie and provide additional insights into the amazing 60-year franchise.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” - (PG-13; 2 hours, 41 minutes) - Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M'Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba) fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T'Challa's death. Screens at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, Saturday, Dec. 10, Wednesday, Dec. 14 and Thursday, Dec. 15; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11.
"It’s a movie about not seeing beyond your own grief... Every narrative tendril is implicated in grief, from historical colonialism to environmental exploitation to political repression." - Kevin Maher, Times (UK)
