This week at Harbor Theater
“Inside Out 2” - (PG; 2 hours) - In Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” Riley’s mind headquarters is being demolished to make room for new emotions. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust have been running things smoothly until Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, arrives, and she isn’t alone. This sequel delves into the mind of a newly minted teenager, exploring how these characters adapt to the changes. Featuring the voices of Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Tony Hale, and Liza Lapira, the film is directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Mark Nielsen. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2 p.m. (OCAP), 7 p.m. (regular), Thursday, Aug.15, 7 p.m.
“Inside Out 2 expands the worlds of its characters to capture how our worlds get bigger with age. That, ideally, is what sequels can be for Pixar: a way to help guide young audiences through the turbulence of growing up.” – A.A. Dowd, The Ringer
“Janet Planet” - (PG13; 1 hour, 53 minutes) - In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet (Julianne Nicholson). As the months pass, three visitors enter their orbit, all captivated by Janet and her spellbinding nature. In her solitary moments, Lacy inhabits an inner world so extraordinarily detailed that it begins to seep into the outside world. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker captures a child’s experience of time passing, and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother, in this singularly sublime film debut. Screening at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16; Saturday, Aug. 17; Monday, Aug. 19; Tuesday, Aug. 20, Thursday, Aug. 22; Sunday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 2 (OCAP) and 7 p.m.
“Janet Planet is a delightful and unsettling exploration of a mother-daughter relationship…Though there’s tenderness in it, it’s not your classic coming-of-age heart-warmer. This is a child’s-eye view of a parent rendered without a sheen of nostalgia—it feels less like a story being told by a thoughtful adult looking back than one springing directly from the fierce, untamed mind of a child.” - Stephanie Zachareck, Time
Coming soon: “Deadpool and Wolverine” - (R; 2 hours, 7 minutes) - For the third installment in the Deadpool franchise, this action comedy finds a listless Wade Wilson toiling away in civilian life with his days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) behind him. But when his home world faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctant Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Opening Friday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.
