This week at Harbor Theater
“Janet Planet” - (PG13; 1 hour, 53 minutes) - In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet (Julianne Nicholson). As the months pass, three visitors enter their orbit, all captivated by Janet and her spellbinding nature. In her solitary moments, Lacy inhabits an inner world so extraordinarily detailed that it begins to seep into the outside world. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker captures a child’s experience of time passing, and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother, in this singularly sublime film debut. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2:00 p.m. (OCAP) and 7 p.m. (regular), Thursday, August 22, 7:00 p.m.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” - (R; 2 hours, 7 minutes) - For the third installment in the Deadpool franchise, this action comedy finds a listless Wade Wilson toiling away in civilian life with his days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) behind him. But when his home world faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctant Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Reynolds makes himself at home in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with acerbic wit while Hugh Jackman provides an adamantium backbone to proceedings in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” an irreverent romp with a surprising soft spot for a bygone era of superhero movies. Plays at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23; Saturday, Aug, 24; Monday, Aug. 26; Tuesday, Aug. 27 and Thursday, Aug. 29; at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25; and at Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 2 (OCAP) and 7 p.m. (regular)
"There's a lot to enjoy in Deadpool & Wolverine: Forgotten characters given a moment to shine, classic comic book covers recreated, and a side-scrolling battle scene set to the music of Madonna. But in the end, I was most pleased with what the movie was not. This isn't a bridge to a new era of Marvel movies. It's not the magic solution to erase Disney's shambolic efforts of the last few years. Really, this is Deadpool's party. It's a raunchy riot, and like any good bash, you may not remember all the details the next day, but you'll know you had a good time." - Eli Glaser, CBC News
