This week at Harbor Theater
“Green Border” - (PG15; 2 hours, 32 minutes: B&W, English subtitles) - In the treacherous and swampy forests that make up the so-called “green border” between Belarus and Poland, refugees from the Middle East and Africa trying to reach the European Union are trapped in a geopolitical crisis cynically engineered by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko. In an attempt to provoke Europe, refugees are lured to the border by propaganda promising easy passage to the EU. Pawns in this hidden war, the lives of Julia, a newly minted activist who has given up her comfortable life, Jan, a young border guard, and a Syrian family intertwine. Final shows on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 12, 7 p.m.
“The haunted faces of actors such as Jalal Altawil are hard to forget. An extended coda, in which Ukrainian refugees are warmly welcomed by the same Polish guards who tormented Syrian refugees, packs a serious punch.” – Tara Brandy, Irish Times
“Green Border confronts the horror and heroism of the refugee crisis. With pulse-pounding sweep and moral fury, the veteran Polish director Agnieszka Holland turns her camera on injustice at the Polish-Belarusian border.” – Justin Chang, The New Yorker
“It Ends With Us” - (PG13; 2 hours, 11 minutes) - On Sunday, Sept. 15, representatives from Finding Our Voices will join us for the 2 p.m. screening of the film. Following the film, everyone is invited to participate in a conversation about issues depicted in the movie. When Lily Bloom’s first love, Atlas Corrigan, unexpectedly reappears, her relationship with Ryle Kincaid, a charming yet abusive neurosurgeon, is thrown into turmoil. Faced with echoes of her traumatic childhood, Lily realizes she must find the strength within herself to make a life-altering decision about her future. It Ends With Us, the first Colleen Hoover novel to be adapted for film, tells the powerful story of a woman navigating love, pain, and the difficult choices that define her path to self-discovery and independence. Plays at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13; Saturday, Sept. 14; Thursday, Sept. 19; at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15 Wednesday, Sept. 18 (OCAP).
