This week at the Harbor Theater
"Maria" - (R; 2 hours, 3 minutes) - This profoundly human drama centers on opera star Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie, a Golden Globe nominee) who is determined to break free from the confines of her past and define her own future. Set against the backdrop of a tight-knit coastal community, the story follows Maria’s quiet struggles as she confronts family expectations, cultural traditions, and lingering ghosts of old wounds. When unforeseen circumstances force her to step beyond familiar shores, she must find the courage to craft an identity on her own terms. With intimate performances, evocative cinematography, and a hauntingly beautiful score, "Maria" is a meditation on resilience, belonging, and the quiet strength that emerges when one dares to seek a path less traveled. Two shows: Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. (OCAP) and Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
"High Noon" - (1952); 1 hour, 25 minutes) - A Classic Film Series selection - This is a landmark Western that redefined the genre with its gripping tension and moral complexity. Directed by Fred Zinnemann, the film famously unfolds in near-real time as Marshal Will Kane (Gary Cooper) faces his former nemesis who’s returned to exact revenge. Alone and abandoned by the townspeople, Kane must decide whether to stand his ground or run—a choice that tests the very meaning of duty, honor, and courage.
A critical and commercial success, "High Noon" earned seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, due in large part to its taut storytelling, stark cinematography, and stirring score by Dimitri Tiomkin. Gary Cooper took home the Oscar for Best Actor. "High Noon" remains revered as a cinematic masterpiece, celebrated for its nail-biting pace, thought-provoking themes, and timeless portrayal of an everyman hero standing alone for what’s right. Two shows only at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9 and Saturday, Jan. 11.
"Moana 2" - (PG; 1 hour, 40 minutes) - Three years after her first ocean journey, Moana (voiced by Auli‘i Cravalho) is about to take on a brand-new role: serving as her people’s first official connector/wayfinder in centuries. But when a startling vision warns of dangers lurking beyond the horizon, Moana can’t ignore the call of the sea—or her ancestors. Joined by a colorful new crew—like the fearless historian Moni, the clever canoe builder Loto, and the hilariously grouchy elder Kele—Moana sets out on a quest to find a legendary lost island that once bridged the waterways of Oceania. Along the way, they’ll outwit playful sea creatures, discover hidden corners of the ocean, and reunite with everyone’s favorite larger-than-life demigod, Maui (Dwayne Johnson). Opening night Family Film Deal: Get two free admissions and one free large popcorn per family (1 adult ticket and 1 child's ticket). Additional family members pay regular ticket prices. Offer is valid only for opening night, Friday, Jan. 10. Screenings at 7 p.m. are Jan. 10, Saturday, Jan. 11 and Thursday, Jan. 16; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12 and Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2 p.m. (OCAP).
"The Lady in the Van" - (2016; PG13, 1 hour, 44 minutes) - A Tea With Dame Maggie series selection - Join us for our wildly popular series celebrating the legendary Dame Maggie Smith! Enjoy some of her most iconic films paired with “Tea," which includes finger sandwiches, cookies, scones, cake, tea, and wine. Set in the quaint London neighborhood of Camden Town, this film tells the true—and truly unusual—story of Miss Mary Shepherd (Smith), an eccentric, homeless woman who “temporarily” parks her rundown van in playwright Alan Bennett’s driveway and then decides never to leave. Over the course of 15 years, her presence tests the patience of those around her and forces Bennett to confront his own compassion and curiosity. Smith’s portrayal of Miss Shepherd steals the spotlight, blending caustic wit, vulnerability, and an undercurrent of mystery that keeps both Bennett and the audience guessing. One show: Monday, Jan. 13. Tea is served at 12:30 p.m. Film begins at 1 p.m. Tickets & Tea: members – $13; non-members $17; Film only tickets: members $8 and non-members $12.
