This week at the Harbor Theater
"All We Imagine As Light" - (NR; 1 hour, 58 minutes) - In bustling Mumbai, head nurse Prabha (Kani Kusruti) finds her steady routine upended when an unexpected gift from her estranged husband in Germany forces her to confront old wounds. Meanwhile, her younger roommate Anu (Divya Prabha), a new hire at the hospital, struggles to carve out a private space in the crowded city for a secret romance with a Muslim man—one she must hide from her strict Hindu family. Their coworker, cook Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), faces the threat of eviction, adding another layer of tension. Director Payal Kapadia, Cannes Grand Prize winner for her debut, masterfully captures the vibrant textures of contemporary working-class Mumbai and the serene beauty of a nearby beach town. When a spontaneous trip to the coast provides a rare escape, the women find a space to express their deepest desires and dreams. "All We Imagine as Light" is a soulful exploration of connection, resilience, and the transformative power of friendship and sisterhood. Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. (OCAP) and Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.
"Ex-Husbands" - (NR; 1 hour, 38 minutes) - A sharp and insightful comedy-drama that follows three newly divorced men as they navigate the chaotic aftermath of their failed marriages. Each embarks on a journey of self-discovery, encountering humorous mishaps and poignant moments as they redefine their identities and learn to embrace life after love. With witty dialogue and unflinching honesty, the film captures the bittersweet reality that sometimes the end of one chapter paves the way for a new beginning. Manhattan dentist Peter Pearce (Griffin Dunne) finds himself in the throes of a midlife crisis when his wife of 35 years (Rosanna Arquette) leaves him. Impulsively, he books a trip to Tulum, Mexico, only to crash his son’s bachelor party—realizing he’s not the only member of the Pearce clan in crisis. Co-starring Richard Benjamin, James Norton, and Miles Heizer, 'Ex-Husbands' is a warmhearted exploration of starting over, reminding us that every ending can spark a fresh, exciting start. Screening at 7 p.m.: Friday, Feb. 28, Saturday, March 1 and Thursday, March 6; plays at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2 and Wednesday, March 5 (OCAP).
“With a vibrantly charming lead from Griffin Dunne, and enough melancholic worldly wisdom to leaven the humour, 'Ex-Husbands' is an accessible, ostensibly lightweight offering but one nevertheless carried off with expertise, intelligence and empathetic insight.” — Jonathan Romley, Screen Daily
"Heat & Dust" - (1983; R, 2 hours, 13 minutes) - Merchant Ivory Luncheon Series - Enjoy a light lunch and a classic film from Merchant Ivory’s stunning catalogue of historical literary dramas. When Anne (Julie Christie) discovers a long-forgotten family scandal involving her deceased grandmother, Olivia (Greta Scacchi), she decides to investigate further by traveling to the scene of the crime: India. In the 1920s, Olivia had been married to an official in the colonial government but had an affair with an Indian man that resulted in an abortion and disgrace. By coincidence, Anne also finds herself conducting an affair with an Indian man and faces similar social prejudice. One show only: Tuesday, March 4 - luncheon at 12:30 p.m., film at 1 p.m.
“After 37 years, 'Heat and Dust' stands up as an intelligent, ambitious, substantial picture – with flaws but also intriguing aspects that were perhaps not sufficiently understood at the time.” - Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
