“Janet Planet” - (PG-13; 1 hour, 53 minutes) - In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker captures a child’s experience of time passing, and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother, in this singularly sublime film debut. Y Arts Present – “The Little Mermaid JR” - In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home — and her fins — behind and live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking. “SEA CHANGE: The Gulf of Maine” - (1 hour, 30 minutes) - A NOVA Special Presentation – Advance reservations required! In partnership with the Island Institute, GBH, and Maine Public, here is a free sneak peek and insider experience into the upcoming, not yet released, three-part series from PBS NOVA. Reservations are required! Features excerpts from three films in the upcoming prime time public TV series; followed by a panel discussion and Q & A featuring National Geographic Photographer, and Sea Change producer Brian Skerry; series director, writer, and producer, Chun-Wei Yi; series executive producer, John Bredar; and Susie Arnold, senior ocean scientist for the Island Institute. Cave Dogs – “Liquid States” - Live event! - Experience something you’ve never seen before! Fluid shadows and images dance in wild imagination across the screen. Liquid States explores water as substance, metaphorical allusion, and engage debates relating to the geographies and socio-politics of water. Cave Dogs bring together visual artists, musicians, dancers, and storytellers in the spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration. The performances consist of innovative, large-scale shadow projections cast onto a screen from sculptures, props, costuming and the human body, in concert with projected video imagery, spoken narrative, and an original soundtrack. Cave Dogs principal members are Suzanne Stokes, James Fossett, Adam Mastropaolo, Dillon Paul, Ted Conway, Felipa Gaudet and Alchemy Mastropaolo. At 7 p.m. Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20. Cave Dogs – Paper Cutting and Lighting Workshop - A 3-hour workshop on Saturday, July 20 at 1 p.m. for ages 15 and up will focus on creating an intricately cut paper panel, then create shadows and movement from the panels, using Cave Dogs’ unique lighting techniques. “Hook” - (PG; 2 hours, 24 minutes) – Free in partnership with Skidompha and its 2024 Summer Reading Program. When his young children are abducted by his old nemesis, Capt. Hook (Dustin Hoffman), middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams) returns to his magical origins as Peter Pan. “Run Lola Run” - (R; 1 hour, 20 minutes) - Celebrate 25 years of one of the most exhilarating films of all time! In this visually and conceptually impressive film, two-bit Berlin criminal Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu) delivers some smuggled loot for his boss, Ronnie (Heino Ferch), but accidentally leaves the 100,000 mark payment in a subway car. Given 20 minutes to come up with the money, he calls his girlfriend, Lola (Franka Potente), who sprints through the streets of the city to try to beg the money out of her bank manager father (Herbert Knaup) and get to Manni before he does something desperate. An Evening with ... New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly and local historian Heather Cox Richardson - An intimate conversation about women cartoonists, American history, and Liza’s new documentary. Liza will be signing copies of her latest book “Very Funny Ladies,” available for purchase at the event, and a special selection 8 x 10 print of a cartoon. Thursday, July 25 at 7 p.m. Tickets: $50 General admission.
