Y Arts presents: “Once on This Island JR” - (approx. running time: 1 hour) - Through almost non-stop song and dance, this full hearted musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island, guide Ti Moune on a quest that will test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and even death. One performance only Thursday, Aug. 1 at 5 p.m. Tickets: $10 (all general admission)
“The Princess Bride” - (PG; 1 hour, 38 minutes) - Lincoln Theater is pleased to present the second film in our 2024 Summer Blockbuster series, “The Princess Bride.” One of the most beloved movies of all time with stories of “fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, and miracles,” all on the big screen. Plays Thursday, Aug. 1 at 2 and 7 p.m.
“The Bikeriders” - (R; 1 hour and 56 minutes) - A rebellious time in America when the culture and people were changing. After a chance encounter at a local bar, strong-willed Kathy (Jodie Comer) is inextricably drawn to Benny (Austin Butler), the newest member of Midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals, led by the enigmatic Johnny (Tom Hardy). Much like the country around it, the club begins to evolve, transforming from a gathering place for local outsiders into a dangerous underworld of violence, forcing Benny to choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club. Plays Friday, Aug. 2 at 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3 at 7 p.m.; and at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4 and Wednesday, Aug. 7.
“That’s Entertainment!” - (1974; 2 hours, 12 minutes) - Hosted by Mark Griffin. Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the acclaimed documentary, the last major film to be shot at MGM’s world famous Hollywood back lot. The film boasts more than 100 classic segments compiled from dozens of MGM’s most popular song-and-dance numbers and features newly recorded footage hosted by a variety of familiar faces, including MGM favorites Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Clark Gable, and Liza Minnelli. Griffin, film historian and author, will present a brief introduction to the film and lead a post-screening discussion. Playing Saturday, Aug. 3 at 2 p.m.
“Salt Bay Chamberfest: 2024 Summer Concert Series” - Celebrating their 30th anniversary, the theme, “Music in Blue,” intermingles historical and contemporary works that exemplify the influence of blues and jazz on classical chamber music with music inspired by blue landscapes in nature and the visual arts. Incredible artists, and the SBC-commissioned world premiere work by pianist/composer Conrad Tao inspired by the 100th anniversary of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” Concert dates: Tuesday, Aug. 6, Friday, Aug. 9, Tuesday, Aug. 13 and Friday, Aug 16. Concerts are at 7:30 p.m. with pre-concert talks beginning at 6:30. Season subscription: admission to four evening concerts and pre-concert lectures - $165. Single concert ticket: admission to concert and lecture - $45 general admission, $30 First time attendee, and students are free.
“CARLO…and His Merry Band of Artists” - (NR) and UMVA Portrait Pop-Up Art Gallery - Filmmaker Richard Kane (Truth Tellers) will be joining us for this special screening followed by a talkback. A Pop Up Portrait gallery from the artists of Union of Maine Visual Artists will be available to view Aug. 3 - 16 during the theater’s open hours. In the film, Carlo Pittore, an exuberant, larger-than-life figurative artist and activist is discussed by a small group of friends and fellow artists who gathered at a late afternoon al fresco picnic to assess Carlo’s impact. He died in 2005 at the age of 62. His advice to young artists to strike out, follow their dreams, and “Do It” was palpable… as was the love for him and the hurt he sometimes caused. Memories and perspectives clash. Thursday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. $15 adult, $13 members, and $5 youth ages 18 and under. Please note” Not suitable for viewers under 15.
