“CARLO…and His Merry Band of Artists” - (NR; 1 hour, 17 minutes) - UMVA Portrait Pop-Up Art Gallery reception
Filmmaker Richard Kane (“Truth Tellers”) will join us for this special screening of his documentary film, followed by a talk back. A pop up portrait gallery from the artists of Union of Maine Visual Artists will be viewable from Saturday, Aug. 3 -Friday, Aug. 16. In the film, Carlo Pittore, larger-than-life figurative artist and activist, is discussed by a group of friends and fellow artists who gathered at a late afternoon el fresco picnic to assess Carlo’s impact. Pittore died in 2005 at the age of 62. Event, with Pop-Up Gallery reception, Thursday, Aug. 8, reception at 6 p.m., film at 7. Tickets: $15 adult, $13 members, and $5 youth ages 18 and under. “Salt Bay Chamberfest – Festival Concert 2” - Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Salt Bay Chamberfest has created “Music in Blue,” intermingling historical and contemporary works that exemplify the influence of blues and jazz on classical chamber music with music inspired by blue landscapes in nature and the visual arts. Upcoming concerts: Friday, Aug. 9; Tuesday, Aug. 13, and Friday, Aug. 16. All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. with pre-concert talks at 6:30 PM. Single concert ticket (includes admission to concert and pre-concert lecture): $45 general admission, $30 first-time attendee, students free.
“National Anthem” - (R; 1 hour and 39 minutes) - Dylan (Charlie Plummer), a soft-spoken 21-year-old construction worker, is the de facto father figure to his little brother and works odd jobs to help the family get by. After he finds himself with the opportunity to work at a ranch, he is welcomed by a vibrant community of rodeo performers who openly explore their identities and sexuality. He is especially drawn to Sky (Eve Lindley), a force of nature who Dylan connects with deeply, as he begins to forge his own identity. Writer/director Luke Gilford, making his feature film directorial debut, sets his moving and exhilarating cinematic reinvention of the coming-of-age story against stunning Western landscapes to boldly re-imagine a hopeful exploration of first love, found family, and self-discovery that is both timely and timeless. Playing Saturday, Aug. 10 at 2 and 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 11 at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m.
Y Arts present: “Finding Nemo JR.” - (approx. run time: 1 hour) - Marlin, an anxious and over-protective clownfish, lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo, who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home. But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean. Featuring memorable songs such as “Just Keep Swimming,” “Fish Are Friends Not Food,” and “Go With the Flow,” “Finding Nemo JR.” brings a vibrant underwater world to life on stage in a story full of family, friendship, and adventure. Thursday, Aug. 15 at 5 p.m. Tickets: all seats $10. Purchasing tickets in advance is highly recommended for Y Arts performances.
