“Sullivan’s Travels” - (1941; 1 hour, 31 minutes) - Joel McCrea stars as a famous filmmaker who wants to quit making dopey comedies and shoot a socially conscious epic called “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” Oh, brother is more like it as the clueless McCrea hits the road with a dime in his pocket – and Veronica Lake by his side – in this acclaimed show biz satire from two-time Oscar-winning writer-director Preston Sturges. We are pleased to be joined at each Classic Film Club screening by film historian and CFC host, Jeannie MacDonald, for a pre-film introduction and post-screening talk back. As they embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of the unconventional route their love story has taken, in filmmaker John Crowley’s decade-spanning, deeply moving romance. “The Magic Flute” - The Met Live in HD: Holiday Encore – (2006; 1 hour, 40 minutes - no intermission) - The Met’s first-ever Live in HD transmission—the abridged, English-language version of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” returns to cinemas this holiday season. Tony Award winner Julie Taymor conjures a spellbinding staging, replete with a kaleidoscope of color and parades of puppetry in this delightful production featuring a stellar cast of Met stars including tenor Matthew Polenzani, baritone Nathan Gunn, and bass René Pape. “After the Rain: Putin’s Stolen Children Come Home” - (PG; 1 hour, 15 minutes) – Free event. Deep in a forest by the Baltic Sea, a group of Ukrainian families come together to start the healing process with the help of golden retrievers and palomino horses at an animal therapy retreat. In the safety of the forest, the children’s memories of being illegally deported to Russia and their families’ struggles to rescue them are unraveled with the help of skilled and sensitive counselors. The joy and humor the children discover during their time in the forest make it easy to forget that their stories are the reason the International Criminal Court recently issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin. Nearly 20,000 abducted children remain in Russian institutions. Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 5 p.m.
“Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers” - (1 hour, 30 minutes) -Exhibition On Screen – 200 years after its opening and a century after acquiring its first Van Gogh works, the National Gallery, London is hosting the UK’s biggest ever Van Gogh exhibition. Van Gogh is not only one of the most beloved artists of all time, but perhaps the most misunderstood. This film is a chance to reexamine and better understand this iconic artist. Focusing on his unique creative process, Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers explores the artist’s years in the south of France, where he revolutionized his style. Van Gogh became consumed with a passion for storytelling in his art, turning the world around him into vibrant, idealized spaces and symbolic characters. Playing Thursday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. and Friday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m.
