Hello Islanders – Wow, what a summer! It's that time of year when we should be relaxing, but every relative, friend and distant acquaintance wants to come visit us. Make the most of it, and come see us to register those boats, and get your fishing and shellfish harvesting licenses. Maybe get them a three-day shellfish license, and they can go get dinner!

Town Committee Vacancies: Looking for a way to get more involved and serve your community? There are several town committees with vacancies! See the list below, and submit an application if you are interested! 

Board of Appeals: Alternate #2; Harbor Committee: Alternate #2; Planning Board: Alternate #1 and Alternate #2; New committee: Town Property Maintenance Committee! The town owns several properties that all need monitoring and upkeep. Do you have a knack for building maintenance, property maintenance, or landscaping? If so, we'd love to hear from you! 

Antlerless Deer Permit Lottery: Look out Bambi! The deadline for hunters to throw their name in the pot for an antlerless deer permit is Aug. 1. See the state website for details. 

"Moving Civilization to Space" Presentation: Tuesday, Aug. 6, 6:30 - 8:30, Old Town Hall, 1217 Main Road: Come hear planetary physicist and former NASA scientist Philip Metzger give a presentation on the possibilities and pitfalls of living in space! Moon pies and space-themed candy bags will be provided. A world class scientific event here on our own little island! Should be out of this world!

19th Annual Shore Run, Sunday, Aug. 18, 7:30 a.m. - 12 p.m., Old Town Hall, 1217 Main Road: Strap on your sneakers! Time for another Shore Run to benefit the WVFD! This annual fundraiser attracts runners from across Maine and New England. There's a walking option too, for those of us less inclined to break a sweat. See westportisland.org for details and registration forms. 

Alzheimer's Support Group: Caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer's are invited to join registered nurse Carol Norris on the second Friday of every month from 10 to 11:30 a.m. via Zoom for support and advice. Email carolnorris2953@gmail.com, or call 207-350-2721 for the Zoom link. 

Share the road! As summer heats up let's all slow down a little and keep an eye out for walkers and bikers, especially on Main Road.

Bridge work this summer/fall: The DOT will be re-paving the Westport bridge over the summer and fall. Once again, our patience and neighborliness will be tested as we wait for the light to turn green (even if no one is coming the other way!)

CMP tree work: CMP would like you to know that they will be conducting tree trimming and removal if necessary along their lines this summer. They may or may not be able to notify property owners ahead of time. If you have a tree near the lines that you are fond of, you may want to give CMP a call!
