Westport selectmen discuss referendum and water testing
The Westport Island Board of Selectmen met Monday evening and reviewed a number of agenda topics.
Among these was an update from the town’s history committee on the grant application made to the Maine State Archives. The approximately $2,300 grant would provide financial assistance to the town for the preservation of historical and archival documents, currently stored in the town hall and town office.
Specifically, it would cover the cost of a consultant who would first examine storage locations and then help to prioritize required next steps. The grant was submitted in time to qualify before the Oct. 1 deadline.
A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. for comments concerning the budget committee referendum, which will be determined by vote on Nov. 4.
The Westport Island Board of Selectmen had proposed a repeal of the budget committee in June of this year because the committee did not have enough members to perform its responsibilities under the governing ordinance.
At that time, Island residents voted to continue the budget committee despite the lack of committee members.
Although nomination papers for five members of the budget committee for a 3-year term and for two alternate members for 2-year terms were available at the town office between Aug. 19 and Sept. 30, no nominations have been received to date.
The public hearing will include discussion of the referendum to repeal the budget committee (due to lack of committee members) and if not, identify those wishing to place their names on the ballot for service on the committee.
An ongoing issue for the Westport Selectmen has been the discussion of water quality testing in the town. Selectman Gerald Bodmer has been in contact with the Drinking Water Program of the State’s Center For Disease Control and Prevention to inquire as to best practices for testing the town’s water supply.
Experts at the Drinking Water Program have recommended that the standard “safety test” be used which would examine water samples for any indication of total coli form bacteria, E. coli bacteria, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen and ph levels. The board approved the standard test for the current year.
Lincoln County Community Resources will hold an Expo from 1 to 3 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 17, at St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle. Organizations that provide services to Lincoln County residents will be available at the Expo to share information about their organizations. The Expo is free and will hold a free drawing for heating oil in the afternoon.
