‘Where’s Wendy?’
Wendy Pieh, candidate for House District 45, knocked on Door 1700 this week! She has been driving the roads of the district of Waldoboro, Bremen, Washington and Friendship with her Gazetteer at hand, meeting and listening to residents. Up early, feeding goats and heading out to do doors is a daily event. It is hard work, but she noted that these are communities of hard working people and every day folks in District 45 all get up early and head off to work hard. She is no different.
“Doing a door to door campaign is the only way I can learn what folks are concerned about, what they need, and most important it lets them know that I really want to hear directly from them. It is also how I will represent them in the House if I am fortunate enough to be elected. I am applying for the job by showing how I will do the job!”
This is not the first time she has knocked on many of these doors. Her four previous campaigns all took the same path- because Wendy believes that representing folks in the legislature means knowing all the folks you represent.
“Having people send me to the Maine Legislature to work on their behalf, is an honor,” she said, “getting to know them by going door-to-door is not just about asking for their vote- it is about earning their vote and their trust.”
During her visits with folks she has heard concerns about property taxes, the loss of farmland and loss of access to marine resources which support so many jobs in this rural district, concerns about inflation and access to health care. Apart from individual ideas and concerns she has heard that residents are worried about the level of partisanship and division in this country. “People are telling me that they want elected folks to work together to find solutions. I bring a collaborative approach to the decision making process while always advocating for the needs of my district. It is who I am and what I do.”
She has been delighted with the warm welcome of so many who recall her riding horseback or leading her two donkeys in parades in previous campaigns!
“Serving as a Bremen Selectman for the past 19 years, and having served as both a Legislator and Selectman previously, I know that the shared positions enhances both roles. As a Selectman, I bring an on the ground understanding of the issues facing communities to Augusta. I look forward to serving with the several other legislators who are also Selectmen, including Rep. Hepler of Woolwich and possibly forming a Municipal Caucus to discuss legislation and share ideas for our communities.”
As a farmer/small business owner for over 30 years, she understands the challenges and has worked on many of those issues in the past. As a Representative, Wendy sponsored bills creating the Ag License plate which raises funds for ag education, changing the inspection for farm trucks from a commercial to regular inspection, shortening the wait time for shellfish harvesting water testing so clammers could get back on the flats more quickly, and especially changing the requirement that when a boat has not been registered for a period of time you no longer need to pay the excise tax for the time it was not registered. All of these bills were the result of her door to door campaigns and her willingness, once elected, to listen to everyone who had a concern.
Wendy Pieh is ready to serve the people of District 45 in the 131st Maine Legislature. She knows the job and will hit the ground running- just as hard as she is running for office!
