‘Wings’ producer wraps up his run
The man who has led the organizing of “Wings Over Wiscasset” its first two years will take a much smaller role next year, instead only booking the music.
Dennis St. Pierre said he wouldn’t even see it as still having a hand in Wings. “More like a pinkie,” he said in a telephone interview August 12.
St .Pierre made his decision to step down from his producer role before Wings’ second annual installment took place August 8 and 9 at Wiscasset Municipal Airport. He said he is leaving the post due to personal commitments.
“It’s so weird,” he said Tuesday night about how it felt to leave the larger role behind. In that interview and an earlier one, St. Pierre said that, although his was a leadership role, Wings took the work of many volunteers, sponsors and organizations. And that will continue to be one of its strengths.
“In a sense, I was the wizard behind the curtain. But the heavy-lifting was done by others.” Another of Wings’ strengths has been that it is as much about education as entertainment, St. Pierre said.
St. Pierre’s tireless example will be hard to replace, said David Stapp, chairman of the Wiscasset Area Chamber of Commerce’s board. Wings came under the chamber’s umbrella this year and will continue to be next year, Stapp said.
He and St. Pierre expressed confidence in Wings’ future, with chamber members, the Maine Aeronautics Association and other groups and people working to keep it going.
“I think it can be even bigger,” St. Pierre said.
