Wiscasset approves funding police overdraft
Voters approved taking monies from the undesignated fund balance to cover a $5,888 overdraft in last year’s police budget at a special town meeting held Tuesday night, Oct. 6 in Wiscasset Community Center.
The voters (14 counting the select board) also approved changes to the town’s shoreland zoning ordinance. The item was inadvertently left off the warrant for the Sept. 8 annual municipal election. The amendment was in accordance with the state statutes to provide safe and healthful shoreland conditions protecting fish spawning grounds, aquatic life, bird and other wildlife habitat. A copy is available on the town’s website.
During the select board’s regular meeting, Town Manager Dennis Simmons said the 2019 audit had been completed by William Brewer of Bath. In reviewing the audit, Simmons said the town had several outstanding notes and loans totaling approximately $3 million that could be consolidated and refinanced through The First at a lower interest rate. Simmons will have more information for the board at its next meeting.
The fire department received one bid on its 1989 Thibault ladder fire truck, $5,678 from an automotive company in Plaistow, New Hampshire. Bidders were required to bid at least $5,000. The select board authorized the town manager and fire chief to finalize the sale.
The board postponed the renewal of a license for sale of consumer fireworks to Big Al’s Outlet Inc., dba Big Al’s Fireworks at 300 Bath Road. Chairman Pam Dunning said the current license doesn’t expire until December. The license must be renewed annually.
New business licenses were approved for Jonathan McGraw, dba J.M. Automotive, LLC, 186 Fowle Hill Road; Chriscinda Park, dba Will Go Driving School, 12 Washington St. and John and Christy Brandt, dba Steamed Beans Coffee Emporium, LLC, 51B Water St.
