Wiscasset Bay Gallery's 30th year starts with an exhibition of color
The Wiscasset Bay Gallery kicks off its 30th year with the exhibition “Bright Paint,” which opens with a reception on Saturday, May 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. The reception, complete with light refreshments, is free and open to the public. “Bright Paint” will be on display through Wednesday, July 9.
Among the highlights of the exhibition are a series of abstracts by Thomaston artist, Scott Redfern. His “Sprung” celebrates the energy of springtime with swirling white lines amidst deep maroons and punchy yellows.
Keith Oehmig's “Sailing off Northeast Harbor” infuses the Maine coast with a royal blue sea set against the deep greens of the towering conifers. A four-masted schooner glides by the rising hills that form the mouth of Somes Sound.
Other contemporary Maine artists exhibiting in this season's inaugural show include Diana Johnson, Tom Curry, Carlton Plummer, Mike Graves, Roberta Goschke, Ian Roberts, David Kasman and Geer Morton.
An eclectic collection of noted American and European artists complement the contemporary works in the “Bright Paint” show. Peruvian artist Guillermo Acevedo’s (1920-1988) Picasso-like oil “The Dove of Peace” resonates with thick brush strokes of earthen colors and aquatic greens. A peasant boy stands entranced as a white dove alights on his shoulder.
An early work by Maine artist Dahlov Ipcar features two exotic pheasants sharing a perch with striped tails intertwined. John Whorf (American, 1903-1959) is represented by a sparkling watercolor of a nude washing by a stream with sinuous birches reflected in the water.
Other noted artists featured in the exhibition include Anatoliy Tertychny (Ukrainian, b. 1954), Henry Hobart Nichols (American, 1869-1962), Louis Peyrat (French, 1911-1999), and Hope Shipee Bunin (American, 1908-1970).
