Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline thought he and Sgt. Kathy Williams would just meet with a Wiscasset man Aug. 20 and hand him notices to cease harassment and cease trespassing at a Rumerill Road home.

Instead, they, another Wiscasset officer, Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett, a sheriff’s sergeant and three sheriff’s deputies and a dog searched much of Wednesday evening in often rough terrain for the man, Cline said.

Now Dan Colby Jr., 32, is  facing a pair of charges, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, and domestic violence stalking, Cline said back at the police station after the search ended for the night. Cline had some scratches on his arms from bushes after the approximately three-hour search that included foot chases when Colby was spotted and allegedly fled. The evening’s events stretched Cline’s workday Wednesday to 13 and a half hours.

No one was hurt during the search but someone could have been, with the woods and uneven terrain involved, Cline said. Much of the search took place near Bradford Road where a relative of Colby lives, Cline said. At one point, the canine officer was waist-high in a brook.

Cline asked that anyone who knows where Colby is to call 207-882-7332 to inform law enforcement.

“He is not armed, but we consider him dangerous,” Cline said.

The chief expressed his thanks for the help Wednesday night from the sheriff’s department.

“The cooperation and the way in which the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Wiscasset Police Department work together is somewhat seamless. We really gel as a team, and the Wiscasset Police Department really relies on (that) assistance  in situations like this,” he said.

Colby was not located in the days following the initial search. “We’re getting tips but none of them are panning out,” Cline said Aug. 21.
