Wiscasset High starts monthly taste-testings

Wiscasset High School is trying something new to promote healthy eating and the school's free food pantry.
The school has teamed up with Good Shepherd Food Bank to hold monthly taste-testings at the school, for students and their families, school nurse Kristin Grasse said.
The first one was January 14. “It went great,” Grasse said. Some students took snacks with them to their sports practice or to after-school meetings, she said.
The food pantry is open to all of the school's students, but Grasse said some teens feel a stigma about taking free food. Shaking that stigma is part of the goal of the new taste-testing events, she said. The events have the added appeal of fresh produce that the pantry doesn't stock.
Students are better able to focus and learn when they're not hungry or lacking in nutrition, Grasse said.
The January event was open just to the school's own students and families but the next one, set for Monday, February 10, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., will be open to families from the Wiscasset primary and middle schools, as well, Grasse said.
Good Shepherd Food Bank will bring more food to accommodate the additional families, she said.
