Wiscasset jail contraband case brings indictments
A pair of Two Bridges Regional Jail inmates were indicted with felony trafficking after allegedly swapping 400 milligrams of a prescription.
The Lincoln County Grand Grand Jury indicted Joseph Marco and Joshua Cote in its December indictments.
Marco, 45, of Phippsburg was charged with Class C trafficking in prison contraband, Class D unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs and Class E violating the terms of his release.
Joshua Cote, 35, of Gardiner was indicted on one count of Class C trafficking in prison contraband and Class E violation of conditions of release on while being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail.
On Nov. 12 a search was conducted in the male housing unit of Two Bridges Regional Jail. Cote was allegedly found with crushed Seroquel, which was identified by the jail's medical staff by the medication's unique coloring.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Rubashkin found that only one person, Marco, in the jail was prescribed the medication.
When Rubashkin interviewed Cote he allegedly admitted that Marco had given him the pill earlier in the day to hold, reportedly because Marco was afraid it would be found if more searches were conducted. Cote reportedly admitted to previously paying Marco with food for the medication, which is used to treat depression and bipolar disorder.
Marco reportedly refused to speak with Rubashkin about the incident and was arrested Nov. 13.
Class C crimes are felonies and are punishable by up to five years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine. Class D and E crimes are misdemeanors and are punishable by up to either one year or six months, respectively, in county jail and up to $2,000 in fines for a Class D crime and up to $1,000 in fines for a Class E conviction.
