Wiscasset Memorial Day observance under sunny skies
This year’s Memorial Day observance drew about 100 people to the war memorial at the town office under a blue sky.
Among the attendees were Terry and Cindy Small, of Wiscasset and Florida, and their granddaughter Mirolee, honoring their son and uncle Private First Class Andrew Small, who fell in April 2006 in the Gulf War. They wore buttons with his image.
Robert Fairfield of Woolwich, a veteran of Korea, also attended.
“We come together on this day, lest we forget,” Wally Staples said, after leading the first prayer.
Flags were handed out to the youngest attendee, Emery Footer, 5, of Dresden, and to the eldest.
Clara Wentworth, recently honored in the town’s annual report, laid the wreath for the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Staples said that at 3 p.m. that day, everyone should stop for a moment of remembrance. This was an act of Congress in 2000 to remind people to recall what the holiday is for.
Staples, who has been giving remarks at the observances on the lawn for many years, received a medallion and card. Post Commander William Cossette Jr. invited everyone to come to the post for doughnuts and coffee.
The honor guard, including Dennis Hill, Dennis Soule, Dale Skillins and Larry Rines, fired a three-gun salute.
