Wiscasset passes library budget, school resource officer
Wiscasset voters on June 9 put Judy Flanagan and William David Cherry into selectmen’s seats and kept Glen Craig and Eugene Stover on the school committee.
In other results released at the polls at Wiscasset Community Center on Tuesday night, residents passed the $8.4 million school budget, narrowly supported funding a second year of the Wiscasset Police Department’s school resource officer, and agreed, 342-197, to contribute $68,950 to Wiscasset Public Library.
The budget committee’s recommendation against that level of library funding prompted many letters to the editor urging residents to pass the funding request.
Selectmen’s Vice Chairman Ben Rines Jr. said he was very glad it passed. His own use of the library dates back to when he was a toddler, he said.
The resource officer passed by just two votes, 274-272.
“It passed, that’s the most important thing,” Sgt. Kathy Williams said. “So I’m happy about that. The schools will benefit from it.”
In a pair of non-binding votes Tuesday, residents favored keeping the town’s police and ambulance departments.
The straw vote about farming out ambulance service came out to 81 yes votes and 464 no’s. “It just shows that the town supports us,” Ambulance Service Director Roland Abbott said. “At least we know we’re wanted.”
The straw vote on discontinuing the police department ran 209-342. “I’m very happy that the town shows that they like us and need us and think we’re doing a good job,” Williams said.
The school budget passed 385-159. “I’m very pleased. We worked very hard to get the school budget down, and the voters appreciated that,” School Committee Chairman Steve Smith said. “We’ll work hard to be worthy of it,” he added.
Smith was also pleased that the resource officer’s funding passed. Next year, the committee plans to put it in the school department budget, he said. The source of the funding was a sticking point when selectmen were considering whether or not to put the position on this year’s ballot.
Voters also agreed 483-62 to have the town take over ownership of Wiscasset Primary School from the school committee. The school is closing after this school year; its classes are moving to Wiscasset Middle School. Tuesday’s vote also authorizes selectmen to sell the primary school property.
The only proposed spending that voters rejected Tuesday was $39,000 in capital reserve funds for a new police cruiser. It lost in a 167-374 vote.
The votes for the two selectmen’s seats came out to 407 votes for Flanagan, 247 for Cherry and 232 for Ervin Deck. Cherry and Deck were seeking their first terms on the board. Flanagan has served previously; she has said she was the first woman on the board and the first woman to serve as its chairman.
Selectmen Pam Dunning and Tim Merry did not seek reelection.
Craig’s 369 votes and Stover’s 365 kept them on the school committee. Preston Dunning announced his write-in candidacy in a June 8 email to the Wiscasset Newspaper; he received 25 write-in votes.
