Wiscasset photographer meets President George H. W. Bush
Local photographer Dave Cleaveland, of Maine Imaging, delivered an aerial photo of Walker’s Point to President George H. W. Bush on Oct. 7. Walker’s Point, in Kennebunkport, is the long-time summer home of the former president and Barbara Bush.
“This actually came about through the Texas Flying Legends," said Cleaveland. "I was hired to photograph them performing an air show over Walker's Point to commemorate the 70th anniversary of an event during World War II that was important to the president.
“One thing led to another and I was asked to photograph Walker’s Point. The toughest part about this photo mission was securing permission from the Secret Service (USSS) and the Federal Aviation Administration, as the area around Walker’s Point is restricted airspace. So I waited for an early morning high tide and a perfect day. When that day came, I let the president’s aide and the USSS know that we would be overhead, and flew the mission.
“Meeting the president was an honor. Not just because he was one of our best presidents, but because of his service in WWII.”
Cleaveland has been photographing the Texas Flying Legends since they first came to Wiscasset several years ago. He has also interviewed several of the local Midcoast Maine WWII veterans, and put together a movie, telling their stories.
He is also on the board for Wings Over Wiscasset, an annual event, featuring the Flying Legends, that honors our veterans and educates our children.
“It was funny, but we didn’t talk about his presidency at all. We talked a little about his service, the Texas Flying Legends, and Wings Over Wiscasset. He was fascinated with the fact that the aerial photo of his summer home was printed on high gloss aluminum,” said Cleaveland.
