Wiscasset’s Haggett’s Garage remembered with sign
The sign from the century-old Haggett’s Garage building is getting its finishing touches, as is the parking lot where the building once stood. The state tore down the building two years ago this month to create the Water Street, Wiscasset lot, part of the downtown improvement project. Project Manager Ernest Martin of Maine Department of Transportation said in an email response to questions from Wiscasset Newspaper Monday, the sign, re-erected at ground level, was due to be sealed Tuesday.
“Hopefully the cedar fence will start going up this week. I think the sign was a great way to recognize the Haggett heritage in the town of Wiscasset,” Martin wrote. “It looks great!”
Wiscasset’s Steve Christiansen thinks so, too. He remembers the building from his childhood. He said he stopped by the lot a couple weeks ago and talked to those working on the sign. “I think it looks really good. They did a fabulous job on it, I think,” he said in a phone interview Monday. “It looks just the way that I used to see it sitting above the overhead doors on the garage.”
When the fence is installed, loam and seeds will be added to the area around the parking lot, Martin said.
