Wiscasset selectmen meet Monday to set town meeting date
Wiscasset voters will consider raising $66,764 for municipal planning and the town planner position at a special town meeting that selectmen will meet Monday to schedule. The board will meet at 8 a.m. Aug. 7 to decide when and where to hold the meeting.
The warrant will include only two articles, to elect a moderator and consider the planning article inserted by petition. An article for purchasing an ambulance has been put off until November’s general election.
Chairman Judy Colby said the soonest a town meeting can be held is seven days after the warrant is signed. “I’d prefer that we hold it as soon as we can but it will be up to the board to decide.” The town meeting will be held in the Community Center’s Senior Center. “I think we have to plan on there being a fairly large turnout,” she added.
The Wiscasset Area Chamber of Commerce led the petition effort seeking to reverse voters’ June 13 decision to reject the planning budget. Voters defeated the planning article 464-256.
On Aug 1, selectmen authorized EMS Director Toby Martin to take $2,000 from his operational budget to use as a down payment on the purchase of a 2013 ambulance from the city of Auburn. Voters would need to approve the $96,690 to finalize the purchase. Colby said the board might recommend taking monies from capital reserve to buy the ambulance rather than financing it.
