Wiscasset standoff ends in arrest
A Wiscasset man faces several charges after an alleged domestic dispute and police standoff at a Hodge Street, Wiscasset home, according to a press release early February 7.
“Thankfully nobody was seriously injured and the suspect is in custody,” Wiscasset Police Chief Troy states in an email accompanying the release.
Shortly after 11 p.m. February 6, Lincoln County’s 911 Center got a call from Jessica Sanford, 29, reporting that her husband Richard Sanford, 31, had threatened to kill her, and “that she believed she heard him a loading a firearm while she was calling 911,” the release states.
She fled the home at 57 Hodge Street with the couple’s 3-year-old son; Wiscasset Police Officer James Read “quickly removed (the two) from the area,” the release continues. Read and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Dennison had been the first law enforcement officers to arrive, according to the release.
“Richard Sanford closed the door and would not come out when requested to do so by Deputy Dennison,” the release continues. ”More Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department personnel arrived on scene and a perimeter was set up around the residence. Jessica had disclosed to Officer Read that Richard had numerous firearms in the residence.”
Cline got to the scene and met with Lincoln County Sheriff’s Sergeant Dan Sceviour, the release states. “Richard started to come out of the residence and quickly went back inside. He started to come out a second time and once again went back inside. At this point Chief Cline requested the Maine State Police Tactical Team respond to the scene.
“Negotiations were started over a police cruiser public address...system initially. Chief Cline was able to make contact with Richard via cell phone. Chief Cline negotiated with Richard and he subsequently came out of the residence voluntarily, surrendering to officers and deputies on scene without further incident.”
Sanford was then charged with domestic violence assault, domestic violence criminal threatening, obstructing report of crime or Injury, and creating a police standoff, the release states.
Jessica Sanford had minor injuries “as a result of the assault” and was treated and released from Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick, according to the release. The child was not injured, the release states.
Richard Sanford was released from Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on $1,000 cash bail Friday, jail staff said.
