Wiscasset wins grant for airport study
The Wiscasset Municipal Airport has won $45,000 toward a study that airport manager Ervin Deck said could lead to safety improvements.
The study will look at the environmental impact of removing off-airport obstructions, according to the Federal Aviation Administration that awarded the grant.
Stantec Consulting Services has offered to do the study for $49,384, according to Town Manager Laurie Smith's June 18 letter to the FAA. State and local kick-ins of $2,500 each would cover the part of the cost that runs over the grant, according to the town's application.
A 2012 analysis identified vegetation that was causing obstructions on and off the airport property; a recent FAA ground survey indicated that trees were very close to penetrating a light surface. If that happens, that runway end would need to be closed day and night, according to the application.
“This option in the eyes of the town is not acceptable,” the application states.
