Wishing sailors a great year
Another stretch of perfect Maine weather helped to mark the final week of Keelboat sailing classes at the Boothbay Sea and Science Center. Sailors Weylon Armstrong, Ben Pearce, Sophia Gudroe, Ben Mintz and Adam Sirois worked with the Turnabout and Optimist dinghies and the Sonar perfecting their tacking, jibing and navigation skills, as well as their on the water communication skills. They’re also very pleased to share that they can now include command of the downwind spinnaker sail to their list of accomplishments.
On Friday, the sailors learned about the Center’s 22-foot Eastern skiff during their travels to and from historic Burnt Island where they spent their last day in the program learning about the Island’s history and exploring the terrain.
The Boothbay Sea and Science Center would like to take this opportunity to wish all its junior sailors a fabulous school year. The Center looks forward to welcoming everyone back in summer 2014.
This week, Monday through Friday, weather permitting, the Boothbay Sea and Science Center is holding an Open House at Wotton’s Wharf from 1 to 4 p.m. Open to the public, the event is designed to share information about the Center’s 2014 summer programs and offer a firsthand sailing experience aboard the Center’s 23-foot Sonar sailboat. Space will be limited aboard the keelboat.
BSSC’s program offers weekday instruction in sailing and seamanship for students age 5 to 55-plus in rowboats, Turnabout sailing dinghies and Sonar keelboats out of Wotton’s Wharf. Boats are also available for private instruction on some weekends depending on availability. Please contact BSSC Sailing Director Gray Ferris at 207-350-5357 or visit boothbayseaandsciencecenter.org for more information about our exciting programs. Classes at BSSC are filled on first-come, first-served basis.
