Wolfe leaving Wiscasset town clerk’s job
Wiscasset is losing its town clerk of six years. Christine Wolfe said Friday that her last day on the job will be June 26.
Leaving for the town clerk’s job in Freeport was not a decision she took lightly, Wolfe said in an interview at the municipal building on June 12.
“I think of the residents here as my extended family. I really do,” she said about Wiscasset.
However, the Dresden resident said Freeport has the form of local government that has always been her goal to work in, with a council and manager, she said.
It’s a more efficient form of government, and one she hopes to work in through retirement, Wolfe said.
The Freeport Town Council formally appointed her as town clerk at its June 16 meeting, Wolfe said Tuesday night.
Before taking the Wiscasset job, Wolfe, who will turn 50 next month, spent three years as town clerk in Dresden, which has a board of selectmen but no town manager. Wiscasset, with a manager in addition to selectmen, was a step up in her career, and a step closer to her goal, she said.
“When the (Wiscasset) job came up I didn’t even think I had a chance, because they wanted five years of experience. But (then-town manager) Arthur Faucher took a chance and gave me the opportunity.” She will always be thankful to him, she said.
Working under a subsequent Wiscasset town manager, Laurie Smith, was a career-building experience, Wolfe continued. “She was my mentor. I built my confidence level.”
Wolfe also expanded her skills in Wiscasset, to include business, liquor and shellfish licensing.
“It’s been a great pleasure to work with Chris,” Town Manager Marian Anderson said in a telephone interview Friday afternoon. “We will miss her, but we sincerely wish her well .... This is an incredible opportunity for her,” Anderson said about the Freeport job.
Anderson on Friday issued an advertisement for the clerk’s position. It calls for three-plus years’ experience and puts a deadline of noon on June 26 for applications.
