WoodenBoat features shipyard’s work on Ernestina-Morrissey
If you want to know the history of Ernestina-Morrissey and the work that has been and is being done on the schooner at Bristol Marine Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor, pick up a copy of the January/February 2020 WoodenBoat magazine.
The third part of a series on the restructure of Ernestina-Morrissey is a 14-page article featuring several photos by Robert Mitchell, including a photo of the crew working on the ship and the cover photo of Bristol Maine shipwright David Thorpe clamping “the butt end of a garboard plank on the schooner...”
The article was written by David O’Reilly, a former reporter and editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer. O’Reilly interviewed shipwright Harold Burnham, who served as the owner’s representative on the restoration project that began in 2015; master shipwright David Short, who took over the lead on the project; and several of the other shipwrights and workers, including Ross Branch, who invented a cutting frame to save on labor during the project.
The shipyard is still working on Ernestina-Morrissey, which Massachusetts Maritime Academy will eventually own.
