“Boyhood” (R, 2 hours 45 minutes)
Radical in its conceit, familiar in its everyday details, Richard Linklater’s masterpiece follows a boy, Mason (Ellar Coltrane), who’s six when the story opens 18 when it ends. In between, he goes to school; argues with his sister, Samantha (Lorelei Linklater); and watches his mother, Olivia (Patricia Arquette), struggle with work and men, including her ex-husband, Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke). Shot over 12 consecutive years, the film exists at the juncture of classical cinema and the modern art film without being slavishly indebted to either tradition. Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. Presented in partnership with Van Lloyd’s Bistro.
LCCT season auditions - All are invited.
Our second night of auditions for LCCT’s new “Sundays without Scenery” play reading series, and other offerings of the new season: Thursday, Sept. 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Porter Hall at Skidompha Library. Additional information can be found on the theater’s website and Facebook page.
NT Live: “Medea” (1 hour 45 minutes, no intermission)
A new season of live theater from the National Theatre in London kicks off Thursday with Euripides’ powerful tragedy, Medea. Medea is a wife and a mother. For the sake of her husband, Jason, she’s left her home and borne two sons in exile. But when he abandons his family for a new life, Medea faces banishment and separation from her children. Cornered, she begs for one day’s grace - and exacts an appalling revenge, destroying everything she holds dear. The cast includes Helen McCrory, Michaela Coel, Danny Sapani and Cath Whitefield. Plays Thursday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.
“Magic in the Moonlight” (PG-13, 1 hour 40 minutes)
Set in the 1920s on the opulent Riviera in the south of France, Woody Allen's “Magic in the Moonlight” is a romantic comedy about a master magician (Colin Firth) trying to expose a psychic medium (Emma Stone) as a fake. A series of events follow that are magical in every sense of the word and send the characters reeling. In the end, the biggest trick is the one that fools us all. Playing at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, Sunday, Sept. 7, Tuesday, Sept. 9 and Wednesday, Sept. 10; Saturday, Sept. 6 at noon, Thursday, Sept. 11 at 2 and 7 p.m. Presented in partnership with The Endless Spa.
