Woolwich man, others hurt in Bowdoin crash
State Police say alcohol and speed are factors in a crash involving a pickup truck in the town of Bowdoin late the night of Aug. 10. The three occupants of the truck were taken to a Lewiston hospital. Two of them were thrown from the vehicle during the accident and the third was trapped inside.
Troopers said the driver is Robert Mathews Jr., 28, of Bath. He and Emily Freeman, 16, of Topsham were thrown out of the cab of the truck as it overturned off Route 138, about 10:30 p.m. A second passenger, Caleb Donaldson, 19, of Woolwich had to be freed from the wreck by a team of firefighters from three local departments — Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and Topsham. The three people were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with multiple injuries.
A CMMC spokeswoman on Aug. 11 said Donaldson was listed in good condition and Mathews, serious condition. Freeman was no longer at CMMC, the spokeswoman said. No other information was available.
Troopers said Mathews lost control of the 2001 Chevrolet on a curve in heavy fog. The truck overturned several times, coming to rest on its roof wedged against a group of trees. There is no indication anyone was wearing a seat belt.
Troopers said charges against Mathews will be filed after the district attorney’s office is consulted.
