Woolwich remembers those who served
Woolwich held its 117th annual Memorial Day service Monday. Woolwich-Wiscasset Baptist Church hosted this year’s program. The ecumenical service included Day’s Ferry Congregational Church, First Baptist Church of Woolwich and North Woolwich Methodist Church.
“We’re here this evening to give thanks to the many men and women who fought, some giving their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today,” Woolwich Historical Society President Debbie Locke said in her welcoming address.
After an invocation by Rev. Clay Porr of Woolwich-Wiscasset Baptist Church, veterans in attendance were recognized. Every branch of the military except the Coast Guard was represented.
“We do appreciate your having served in our military. Introducing you and thanking you for your service to our country is for me one of the highlights of the year,” said Greg Doak, a member of North Woolwich Methodist Church.
Following the singing of "My Country Tis of Thee," Rev. Tom Tuck of First Baptist Church of Woolwich read Psalm 24.
Roxanne Althouse sang an inspiring rendition of "America the Beautiful" accompanied by Paul Althouse on the piano. Both are members of Day’s Ferry Congregational Church.
In his message, Porr reminded everyone Memorial Day isn’t about the start of summer, barbecues, parades or the Indianapolis 500.
It’s easy to forget how very fortunate we are to live in a country offering so many freedoms, he said. These include freedom to vote, freedom to assemble, freedom to travel and freedom to worship, to name a few. "We sometimes forget these freedoms were fought for and came with a tremendous cost. On Memorial Day, we remember those who fought for our freedoms and did not return.”
In his closing prayer, Porr said, “We know we can easily forget the cost of freedom which is why we set aside this day – to help us remember...”
A goodwill offering was taken to be shared between the town's Flag Committee and Midcoast Veterans Council.
Next year’s Memorial Day Service will be held at North Woolwich Methodist Church.
