Woolwich, state to talk Station 46 Bridge, traffic signal Nov. 15
Maine Department of Transportation officials will return to Woolwich to update residents on the Station 46 Bridge Replacement Project and a traffic signal at the Route 1/Nequasset Road intersection. The meeting is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 in the gymnasium of Woolwich Central School, 137 Nequasset Road.
“The select board requested the meeting. We’re hoping people will come, ask questions and share any concerns they might have,” Select Board Chairman David King Sr. told Wiscasset Newspaper. The meeting is being advertised on the town’s website and next week selectmen Allison Hepler and Jason Shaw plan to go door to door on George Wright Road encouraging residents of the neighborhood to attend.
“It will actually be two meetings,” said Shaw. “Devin Eaton, MDOT senior project manager of the Station 46 bridge project will give an update on the ongoing work, and Robert Skehan, an MDOT safety manager, will discuss the traffic signal at the Route 1/Nequasset Road intersection. People have been asking for this meeting and we’re very pleased that they were willing to come.”
Shaw expects there will be a good deal of discussion on both the bridge work and the traffic light. The light was only supposed to be temporary during bridge construction but could become permanent if the lower end of George Wright Road is closed where it links up with Route 1. “A number of residents have told us they like having the traffic signal there because it makes it easier getting onto Route 1 but maybe needs to be a bit longer,” continued Shaw. “People should come to the meeting and let their opinion be known.”
The meeting will also include a discussion on possible changes to the intersection of the Nequasset/George Wright Road intersection near the municipal building. “We’ve talked to them about improving the turning area here at the bottom of the hill,” said Shaw.
In another matter, the town boat launch at the lower end of George Wright Road will remain closed throughout the bridge replacement project.
