Writers’ workshops this fall at Kefauver Studio & Gallery
Round Table Productions presents the first and second in its series of “Writers’ Workshops” to be held in the fall of 2016. The workshops will be held at the Kefauver Studio & Gallery in Damariscotta, and will offer presentations by award-winning authors. Each workshop is suitable for teens and adults. Complete descriptions of each workshop, including course content, dates, times, and fees, will be shared in the coming months.
The first workshop will be presented by author and editor Holly Hughes and Kathy Gunst, James Beard award-winning food journalist, on October 22-23.
On Saturday morning the 22nd, Gunst and Hughes will lecture together on the history of food and travel writing. In the afternoon, Hughes will present on narrative food and travel writing, including writing memoirs and literary and culinary blogging. Gunst will discuss how to write a recipe and how to write a cookbook, with a group exercise in recipe development. The afternoon sessions will be offered twice that day, allowing participants to attend both.
The Saturday session will include with a tasting of local beverages, and a discussion on writing reviews about them. On Sunday, participants will have the opportunity to submit samples of their own work for Hughes’ personal one-on-one critique.
Holly is a lifelong editor and writer. Her past, like that of all writers, is eclectic: She wrote and edited for Scholastic Inc., was the executive editor for the Fodor Travel Guides, and now has a successful freelance career editing the annual “Best Food Writing Of “ anthologies. Kathy Gunst is the author of 15 cookbooks. She is the Resident Chef for NPR’s award-winning show “Here and Now” heard on over 500 public radio stations. She writes for many publications including the Washington Post, Eating Well, Yankee, Boston Globe, Newsweek, and more.
The Hughes/Gunst workshop on Saturday will conclude with a book signing of their most recent publications: Holly Hughes’ “The Best Food Writing of 2016” anthology, and Kathy Gunst’s “Soup Swap.” For more on Hughes and Gunst, visit www.hollyahughes.net and www.kathygunst.com.
The second workshop in the series will feature children’s book authors Denise Lewis Patrick and Karen Romano Young on November 5th. In the morning, Denise Lewis Patrick will present a session on “Character Creation.” All sessions are suitable for teens and adults.
Karen Romano Young is an author of fiction and non-fiction books for children – some in doodles. Romano Young will represent a hands-on workshop on “Doodle Writing” and an in-depth session on novel building. Patrick is an author of poetry, fiction, and historical fiction for early readers, middle schoolers, young adults, and adults. Her most recent works are “Finding Someplace” and “A Matter of Souls.” In the afternoon, Patrick will continue the morning session, adding content on scene creation.
The Patrick/Young workshop will conclude with a book signing of their most recent publications: Patrick’s “A Matter of Souls,” and Romano Young’s “Hundred Percent,” “Doodlebug,” and “Stuck in the Middle (of Middle School).” Visit www.karenromanoyoung.com and www.deniselewispatrick.com for more on the authors.
